  • North Dakota:Bismarck is the capital of the state of North Dakota. In 1873, Bismarck was named in honor of German chancellor Otto von Bismarck. Bismarck, also known as the "Iron Chancellor", was the founder and first chancellor of the German Empire. Bismarck had a substantial influence on Europe in the 20th century especially in the unification of the German Empire. Bismarck was named after the German statesman with the hope of attracting German investors to the Northern Pacific Railroad. It is the only US state capital named for a foreign statesman.
