Theory and Why It is Important. A theory presents a systematic way of understanding events behaviors and/or situations. A theory is a set of interrelated concepts definitions and propositions that explains or predicts events or situations by specifying relations among variables. The notion of generality or broad application is important.
Why theory is important. 1. Theory provides concepts to name what we observe and to explain relationships between concepts. Theory allows us to explain what we see and to figure out how to bring about change. Theory is a tool that enables us to identify a problem and to plan a means for altering the situation.
The Purpose of Theory . The purpose of theory is practice. We don’t need to interpret and understand reality for its own sake but to act upon (practice) and affect it. Our presence and actions always affect reality (positively or negatively) no matter what.

Why is theory important in the area of sociology? A theory is a proposed relationship between two or more concepts. In sociology theories are statements of reason why particular facts about the social world are related (Marcionis & Geber 2010 p14).
Link to Learning. A theory is a well-developed set of ideas that propose an explanation for observed phenomena. Theories are repeatedly checked against the world but they tend to be too complex to be tested all at once; instead researchers create hypotheses to test specific aspects of a theory .
Nursing theories offer conceptual bases for nursing practice and individual theories often serve as a framework for specific schools of nursing. Some health care facilities will adopt a nursing theory for its nursing staff and in such a case all clinical nursing decisions are ostensibly made through the “lens” of this particular theory .
