And if they suggest a small aperture for one of your photos they’re recommending that you use something like f/8 f/11 or f/16. How to Pick the Right Aperture

A 50 1.4 gets the full depth of a person in focus even wide open at the right distance.
The aperture is the opening in a lens diaphragm that admits light to the sensor. Think of the aperture as an upside down window shade. The higher the shade is up the less light is admitted. The larger the aperture number the less light falls on the camera's sensor The lower the shade more light is admitted. The lower the aperture number the more light falls on the camera's sensor
Apertures rise from f/ 1.4 to f/ 2.8 and go all the way to f/22. Shutter speeds could be 1 /125 or 1 /250 and all the way to 1 /4000 (if you’re lucky). Same goes for the ISO where it jumps from 100 to 200 and keeps going to 3200. ISO. ISO is your camera’s sensitivity to light with a typical range of 100-1600 . Some cameras can go as low as 50 or 64 and reach as high as 12 600 but these are found in very …

Thu May 22 2008 00:00:00 GMT+0530 (IST) · I often to use f/2 to take portrait photo because I still get fast shutter speed and good bokeh (not superb if you compare with f/ 1 .4) – and the most important is you get the larger focus area and better sharpness (compare with f/ 1 .4 because in wide open aperture …
A 50mm f/ 1.8 might not be as sharp as an f/ 2.8 lens if sharpness in considered at the widest possible aperture but if you step down the f/ 1.8 lens to f/ 2.8 you got yourself a contender! For example Canon 50mm f/ 1.8 is almost equal in sharpness if compared to 50mm f/ 1.4 but you have bigger aperture in the 2nd lens and therefore better low light performance.
