He met Fidel Castro and his brother Raul in Mexico in 1954. Guevara joined Castro's efforts to topple Cuba's Batista government. He led guerrilla troops and worked as a military advisor to Castro against Batista's forces. When Castro seized power in 1959, he placed Guevara in charge of La Cabaña Fortress prison.
