It was one of the most common mussels endemic to this region. An oval pigtoe is small to medium sized, obtaining a length of 2.4 inches when mature. Their shells are usually yellowish, chestnut or a dark brown in color. The growth lines are distinctive across the shell. The inside of the shell is shiny and smooth with a slight pearlescence.
