Who regretted turning down the role of Rhett Butler in "Gone with the Wind?"
- Gary Cooper:It was only a month after Margaret Mitchell's 1936 novel "Gone with the Wind" debuted that producer David O. Selznick purchased the film right for $50,000. As he prepared to make the movie, Selznick saw his biggest issue as the casting of the leads: Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler. Selznick had his eyes on Gary Cooper for the role of Butler, and made the offer to Cooper. The prolific, versatile actor whose star was on the rise refused the role, however, stating he believed the film would prove to be one of the biggest flops in movie history. Selznick then offered the role to Clark Gable, and the rest is cinematic history. Cooper reported regretted his decision to pass on the role for the rest of his life. Source: TheVintageNews.com
