- First text message:The first text message was transmitted December 3rd, 1992, over a decade before the existance of Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. On that day, engineer Neil Papworth typed "Merry Christmas" on a computer and sent the first text message to the cellphone of Vodafone director Richard Jarvis. Jarvis read it on his Orbitel 901 cell phone, a phone that weighed more than 4 and a half pounds. At the time, mobile phones didn't yet have keyboards, so Jarvis couldn't respond to the greeting.
