At first he planned a military career, but an injury that resulted in the removal of his left eye ended those plans. He turned his attention to teaching and writing. He became the first Poet Laureate for the United States in 1986 in recognition of his sixteen volumes of poetry. He also published ten novels, with "All the King's Men" netting him a Pulitzer Prize for political fiction. The popular novel was later turned into a successful movie.
