The WLC began as an invitational tournament involving four teams that met every four years, with games between the U.S., Australia, Canada, and England. Following the 1974 tournament, the International Lacrosse Federation (ILF) formed. This was the first men's lacrosse international governing body formed. In 2008, the ILF joined with the women's lacrosse governing body to form the Federation of International Lacrosse. This organization changed its name in 2019 to World Lacrosse.
