For what invention is John Montagu remembered?
- The sandwich:John Montagu was the 4th Earl of Sandwich in England during the 1700s. According to legend, and with agreement from most food historians, Montagu spent a substantial amount of time sitting around a card table indulging his gambling problem. During one marathon card session, the story goes that he asked the house cook to bring him something to eat that would not require him to leave the table. From this, the sandwich was born. The cook supplied slices of meat stacked between two pieces of bread. Montagu made the meal his official gambling food thereafter, which means he ate a lot of them. The popularity of the sandwich grew in London's society circles, eventually taking on the Earl's name. Today, Americans eat more than 300 million sandwiches on any given day. Source: History.com
