Francis Scott Key wrote the lyrics to "The Star-Spangled Banner" during which war?
- War of 1812:On September 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote a poem that was later set to music which eventually became "The Star-Spangled Banner." The poem, originally titled "The Defence of Fort M'Henry," was written after Key witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British Royal Navy ships during the Battle of Fort McHenry in the War of 1812. Key was inspired by the sight of a lone U.S. flag still flying over Fort McHenry at daybreak, as reflected in the words of the "Star-Spangled Banner": "And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there."
