Which rock will float in water?
- Pumice:When rocks are submerged in water, their weight causes them to sink. Pumice, on the other hand, is the only rock that can float in water. Pumice, unlike regular rock, does not sink in water because it has a low density. Pumice rock is formed when a volcano erupts and the lava instantly comes into contact with the water. The lava is cooled by the water quickly and is solidified into pumice with lots air bubbles trapped inside. These air pockets make it light enough to float. Pumice has a porosity of 64–85 percent by volume, allowing it to float on water for years before becoming saturated and eventually sinking.
